Biography
Enzo Gagliardino is born in Brandizzo (Torino), in 1949. At 18 years old, he left his hometown and started traveling the world. He stayed for a long period in Europe (Paris, Marseille, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Bruxelles, London) then in South America, Africa and Far East. In these years he met artists such as Hans Hartung, Vasarely, Mondino, Biras, Arroyo and, while in Paris the Centre Pompidou is raising, Gagliardino frequented the most important european Art Museums and got closer to the History of Art. In 1973 he came back in Italy and started painting by himself. His first subjects are waiting rooms, canteens, hospital’s corridors, boxing gyms: closed spaces that refer to a kafkaesque vision of existence. Between the 1976 and the beginning of ‘80s, the artist works on a cycle based on the imprisonment theme, great dimensions, high-emotional impact, that represent prison structures. The passage to closed and suffocating spaces of urban architectures takes place in the ‘80s, when Enzo starts painting façades, windows and urban furniture, elements that define the sky line of the worldwide world metropolis. The attention to the detail is accomplished in the use of the ‘brick’: it’s the wall – metaphor of life, artificial body that separates the inside from the outside, membrane that protects and limits at the same time the movement – that comes back constantly in the last great dimensions works of Enzo Gagliardino.
