Biography

Fausta Squatriti was born in 1941 in Milan, where she studied painting at the Brera Academy. In 1960, while still a student, she held her first solo exhibition at the Galleria del Disegno, Milan. In 1968 the Swedish art dealer Pierre Lundholm exhibited her first lacquered metal sculptures in Stockholm, the starting point of Squatriti’s international career, which saw her work exhibited in the United States, Israel, South America, Russia and Europe. In 1969 she exhibited at the Kozmopolitan Art Gallery in New York, and her book The Cloud Eye, containing an essay by Gillo Dorfles, was on sale in the bookshop at the Museum of Modern Art, where her work was also on show in the space reserved at the time for young artists. Barnett Newman, who had met the young artist at the Marlborough Gallery the day before, was present at the inauguration of the exhibition. Another crucial meeting was with gallerist Alexander Iolas, who in 1972 exhibited Squatriti’s work in his Geneva gallery, and also employed her as art director, responsible for producing catalogues, books and posters for the artists who exhibited at his galleries in Paris, New York, Geneva and Milan.
Squatriti showed her geometric sculptures in black iron and steel in Milan at Galleria del Naviglio in 1979, and at Studio Marconi in 1980. Denise Renè exhibited her work in a solo show in Paris in 1982, and included her work in a number of cutting-edge exhibitions. In 1987 she began to exhibit at Galerie Karin Fesel in Düsseldorf, and a solo exhibition her work was held at Galleria Bianca Pilat in Milan in 1995. Her work was exhibited at the Mudima Foundation in 2001, and in the same year in an exhibition at the Museum am Ostwald, Dortmund, curated by Ingo Bartsh. In 2009, the Museum of Modern Art in Moscow held an exhibition of her work, curated by Evelina Schatz. In the same year she took part in the show Elles@centrepompidou at the Beaubourg in Paris, and in 2012 her work was shown at Assab One in Milan.
In 2017 the city of Milan will hold major exhibition of her work, curated by Elisabetta Longari and titledSe il mondo fosse quadro, saprei dove andare. . . [If the world were square, I’d know where to go…]. The exhibition takes place in three locations: the Triennale, Gallerie d’Italia and Nuova Galleria Morone. Between 1964 and 1974, together with Sergio Tosi, Squatriti was involved in the creation and publication of artists’ books and numbered and multiple editions, which she continued to produce alone from 1980 to 1986, including a monumental folder titled EXACTA, dedicated to international abstract, mathematical and geometric research.
She has taught at the Fine Art Academies in Carrara, Venice and Milan. She was twice Visiting Professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, USA, and taught at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Mons. She has held conferences in Italy, Honolulu, Tel Aviv, Haifa and Paris.
A poet, narrator and essayist, she has published books both in Italy and abroad.
As one of the three curators of the ‘Art and Science: Colour’ themed 1986 Venice Biennale, two of her essays were published in the catalogue.
Works by Squatriti are held in a number public collections: Centre Pompidou, Paris; Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; MART, Rovereto; Moscow Museum of Modern Art; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Museum del Novecento, Milan; Banca Intesa Sanpaolo, Milan.
