Biography
Joël Stein is born in Saint-Martin Boulogne (France) in 1926. He attended the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and in 1949 Fernand Léger’s atelier. He met “Lettriste” group and the Surrealists. In 1955 he developed the idea of Labyrinth with two-dimension works. Co-founder of the Centre de Recherche d’Art Visuel and than of the GRAV, he worked with moiré effects and the visual activation of the work through the spectator. In 1956 he started painting the first programmed geometrical works based on mathematichal calculus. In 1962 he started a research on the chromatic polarization of light that generated the first enlightened “boites Polariscopes”. In 1965 Stein introduced in his work the use of laser.
At the moment, he lives and works in Paris.
