Biografia
Laddie John Dill nasce a Long Beach, California, nel 1943.
Ed è proprio la sua terra natia ad ispirare le sue ricerche sulla luce: la stessa che, riflessa dalla superficie dell’acqua dell’oceano, quando incontra le immense distese di deserto oltre di esso, sembra quasi tremolare e vibrare. Negli anni ’60 in quelle zone d’America un gruppo di artisti inizia a sentire la necessità di rompere con il passato ma soprattutto con il bidimensionalismo dell’olio o acrilico su tela. Si sperimentano così nuovi materiali come le plastiche, resine, neon e cementi, vetri, allumini, snaturandoli per trasformali in oggetti d’arte con finalità differenti.
Dill si inserisce proprio in questo contesto culturale, dando vita a opere che assomigliano a onde di luce, sinuose, che catturano la luce circostante per poi trasmetterla allo sguardo dello spettatore.
L’alluminio appare non più come un metallo bensì come una pasta fluida in movimento vorticoso, creando infinite sfumature di colore, grazie anche ai colori ad olio utilizzati al momento della forgiatura.
Nel 1968 ha conseguito la laurea al Chouinard Art Institute di Los Angeles. Ha vinto due borse di studio National Endowments for the Arts e una John Simon Guggenheim. Ha partecipato come giurato al California Arts Council, nella sezione Art in Public Buildings.
Vive e lavora a Venice, California.
